Round 3: Yeast!

Yeast is like magic, I reckon. It's brilliant how you can take the most boring and mundane ingredients in the cupboard, bung them in a bowl, beat them up a bit and come out with something fluffy and delicious.

This week, three bakers came out fighting for the microbial side of things.

We had Mim (and Ken the Bread Maker) 's sundried tomato bread.

Fifi produced some spectacular doughnut cupcakes

And I contributed some slightly irregularly-shaped *ahem* "doughballs" to the mix.

Laura also brought some experimental (and utterly delicious) brownies for sampling.

Judges were once again exceptionally generous, with £55 raised for St David's Hospice.

At the end, the scores on the doors were:

1st Place: Fifi - 10 leaderboard points
2nd Place: Mim - 8 leaderboard points
3rd Place: Sara - 6 leaderboard points

Which means we've got a tie going into the final round, with Holly and Fifi both sitting on 18 leaderboard points!

Come back later on this week to see the variety of FABULOUS PRIZES up for grabs and to hear more about the SHOWSTOPPER FINALE! (Yes, both those phrases do deserve CAPITAL LETTERS).

Round 2 : Traybake

Back again with the report on this week's round, and here we go...

After my success last week with the lemon disaster cakes, I decided to rest upon my laurels and make some treats of the non-edible variety...

Ingredients: Felt, stuffing, small beads...
But I'm pleased to report that we had a fantastic offering of delicious goods to tempt people with this week!

Annie's Coffee and Walnut Traybake
(my personal favourite, this was absolutely gorgeous!)

Fifi's S'more Brownies

Holly's Mars Bar Chocolate Crunch

Laura's Chocolate Brownies

Judging was once again pretty close, with all the entries doing very well.

Our final results were:
1st place: Holly - 10 leaderboard points
2nd place: Fifi - 8 leaderboard points
3rd place: Laura - 6 leaderboard points
4th place: Annie - 4 leaderboard points

The total raised for this week's charity, the Terrence Higgins Trust, was a fabulous £55.

Thank you so much to everyone who baked this week. It couldn't happen without you.
In other news, I'm dusting off my soughdough starter in preparation for next week's "Yeast" round! It'll be pizzas, bagels, buns and doughnuts all the way. Very much looking forward to it.

Don't forget, you can get information on upcoming rounds here and check out how the leaderboard stands on this page. Hollywood quotes are here.

We're also still having a think about the charity for our grand showstopper finale. Please let me know if you've got any suggestions.

Round 1: Cupcakes

Cupcakes, cupcakes everywhere...

Cath's Lemon and Poppyseed Cupcakes
My Lemon Disaster Cakes (masquerading as lemon and white chocolate cupcakes)
Holly's "I know they're not cupcakes, but I do make really good Welsh cakes..."
Everyone's efforts were evidently appreciated by all of the judges, with the lowest score being awarded to any of the entries a 6 and a great £40 being raised for Diabetes UK

Scores were independently assessed and tallied by Don, with the results being:

Cath - 100 - 6 leaderboard points
Holly - 104 - 8 leaderboard points
Sara - 106 - 10 leaderboard points

Check out the updated leaderboard to see who's in the top spot.
A fine selection of comments are on our Hollywood Quotes page.
Sign up is already open for the traybake round next Thursday!

Oh yes, oh my, here we go...

Welcome to the sort-of-official website for the Royal Gwent Medical Mess Bake-Off!

Here's the place to visit for information on how the competition will work, who's in the lead and which charities we'll be supporting with the various rounds.

We're kicking off on the 10th of April with the cupcake round, so look for more information then.

In the meantime...
